Top remote tech skills in 2026 — and where the salaries are

Which skills are pulling the highest remote salaries this year, and which ones are commoditizing fast.

The remote tech market is bifurcating: AI infrastructure, ML platform, and devtools work command top compensation; routine frontend/CRUD work is being commoditized by AI assistants. Here's what the data says — and what to learn next.

Where the money is

From the salaries published on RemoteTalent over the last quarter, three clusters consistently sit at the top of the median range:

  • ML / inference platforms — Python, PyTorch, Ray, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP. Staff-level roles often clear €120k+ remote.
  • Distributed backends — Go, Rust, PostgreSQL, gRPC, observability. Payments and infra companies pay a premium.
  • Specialist frontend — design systems, accessibility, performance. Senior + design literacy = scarcity premium.

What's commoditizing

"Build me a dashboard" frontend, hand-rolled CRUD APIs, and most internal tools work is increasingly handled by AI tooling + a single senior engineer. If your day-to-day is mostly that, plan a step up — either depth in a stack (perf, a11y, platform) or breadth into product/architecture.

What to learn next

  1. Production AI — not "use a chat API". Vector search, evals, prompt routing, cost/latency tradeoffs.
  2. Type-safety end-to-end — TypeScript across the stack, schema-driven APIs (Zod / tRPC / GraphQL codegen).
  3. Edge & serverless platforms — Vercel, Cloudflare Workers, Supabase. Where deployments are going.
  4. Async writing — a non-tech skill that pays. Async-first teams promote the people who write clearly.
